Life Poem: Fresh Snow

FRESH SNOW

Flake by flake the falling snow

Amasses to cover the ground

Creating the virginal backdrop

For the world reborn

____________________

What came before no longer exists

Transformed into a new entity draped in white

No object can look old and weary

Instead looks brand new and fresh

____________________

Snowfall untouched creates the perfect scene

Then gives way to sets of footprints

The stamped path by man and creatures

Pressed into the new blanket of pristine snow

Landscape withered and dead at autumn's hand

Takes on breathtaking proportions as born again

Plants and trees hold out their arms and limbs

To receive nature's perfect crystal jewelry

________________________________

As flakes fall one by one from the sky to form

One beautiful image over tree and home

Leaving us to admire the world anew

A kind of black and white photo unfolding

________________________________

Fresh snow speaks to the heart and soul

Nothing's too old to be brought to new life

Beneath the tapestry the heavens shake out

To lie gently over what was there before

________________________________

Is white the absence of all color

Or merely the start of a new palette

On which is transformed the most mediocre tableau

The scene of undeniable beauty wrapped in snow

________________________________

The moment one flake begins to fall it seems

To be calling to its kindred spirits

To come dance in the sky and tumble down

Collectively creating a soft eiderdown layer

________________________________

Untouched snow stands ready for footprints

Showing us a new path to take or retrace

Drifts become the measure of depth of passion

And a dusting can tease us wanting more

________________________________

Let the heavens open and let drift down the snow

Gently creating a field of pure soft white

The background canvas on which to paint

Warm and enchanting scenes of winter life

________________________________

Fresh snow is the start of new life

A beginning, a chance at revival

Walk gently in the soft white powder

Creating a brand new path of your own

About the Poem Fresh Snow

I have always loved snow but there is nothing quite like brand new snow. Even the most rundown ramshackle homes can be given new life and appear sparkling under a blanket of fresh snow.

After a snowfall, my favorite time to photograph or look at the winter wonderland is when it is pristine. It has just fallen and there are no footprints and nothing to mar its perfect surface.

To me, that is the canvas of life in essence. A clean slate on which to add in footprints for the paths we decide to take. As the snow melts and changes, it reflects in my mind's eye the softening that occurs as life goes on and the end result of change.

Snow drifts represent to me the depths of one's passions. They stand straight and true until they too soften and ebb as the surroundings change.

Nothing makes me want fresh heavy snow more than a dusting of snow. It is as if nature was teasing us promising more to come. It reminds me of powdered sugar on gingerbread; just a little extra sweetness added on.

Fresh snow makes me think of renewal and new beginnings. It always makes me feel hopeful about the future and what things can be accomplished by changing the landscape. Nothing ever looks old and weary. The simplest, scraggliest bushes and trees are transformed into crystalline wonders.

So much beauty, so much feeling in fresh snow. It is inspiring and creative altogether.

I enjoyed your poem very much -- and your prose, too. I actually don't like snow. I guess I had too much of it when I was little, but I'm living with it this winter. I'll try to be more positive about it now that I've read your perspective.

This was so nice and you had such a clean presentation of it in the manner you chose for your display. And, in your explanation following, I particularly liked your statement, "Snow drifts represent to me the depths of one's passions." Thank you.

Thank you, Lilyfly. I'm not an Alaskan Kirchner, no - my hubby's from Michigan and we are in Oregon now.

Thank you, Daffy Duck - it's hard not to see the beauty in fresh snow and only wish we got more of it though I'm in a minority on that one~

Wow! You captured the essence of newly falling snow with such exquisite detail giving fresh new metaphors and imagery. My favorite line was:

"Plants and trees hold out their arms and limbs

To receive nature's perfect crystal jewelry"

And the photo was as beautiful and breathtaking as the poem. Loved the reflections on the water and the fact that I was able to enlarge the photo when I clicked on it.

Voted way up across the board except for funny.

Good luck in the contest. Can't believe it's almost over!
